Just saw this on the Mac Visionaries list and thought it might interest some.

I never really knew much about the IPods except that my bf and Mom's partner both have one. I was never really interested cause they don't have real buttons on them and couldn't speak. But now that at least one can, I'd be interested to learn about the different varieties.
Oh my word! I should've waited if I knew about this ahead of time. I got a clasic back in July. Now they should work on something like that for them, and have it as a firware upgrade so noone has to go out and buy a whole new one.
darn I just purchased the stream for reading and the fact I could take tuns of songs with me. thanks for the update!
hm, I need to get a new ipod, so this sounds like the one to get.!! yeayh. My old nano crapped the bed, not keeping a charge for more than a few hours, but when I charge it one day, and don't want to use it till the next day, and it is dead, that means it is time to get a new one. and it's cheaper to get a new nano then to send it to who knows where to get it fixed.
OMG! Can we say birthday is coming up! OMG! This is so flippin' cool!
I want purple!
Ok, I've read a little further now. One needs to use Itunes 8, which is suppose to be very accessible. They spacifically mention window-eyes version 7. I'm curious to find out how accessible it is without that version.
Lol, the grumpy side of me is thinking, damn, I need a new Nano, and now I need to update my screen reader!? Accessibility is never clearcut, is it? Sheesh.
Either way, I'm still excited!
the only reservation i have, is upon reading upon it on the website, it mentions that it speaks "selected" menus. now what i want to know, before i buy, is just how selected is it. it sounds good by reading it but when you get down to the nitty gritty, just how good is it going to be realistically and just how worth while will it be purchasing it at this point without future updates. if anybody can give an answer to this then that would be great. t
damn just bought an IRiver. o well.
Just ordered one.
After doing some research, it seems that it does what rockbox does and generates wav files based on the names of the songs on your nano. I'm hoping that it has enough sence to make things like settings accessable also.
I'll keep you posted.
the clock and a few third party plug ins, were mentioned as not being spoken at this stage. checkout Itunes 8 with jaws, and its fairly good compaired to when i tried using 6.
yeah i want to know just how good it is. i just don't want to buy it and then find out oh crap it's not what i thought it was going to be.
Yeah, I heard about it on the Mac Vissionaries list as well. I might get one sometime, think if I do, i'm going to geta blue one.
I understand that freedom scientific has has support for the Ipod for some time now via a program, but you'll have to go to there site and read on it, can't remember the details. I'm hoping my new cellphone can handle this duty purple, or not, so I can just carry one gadget. Lol. Apples have great sound quality though, so.
just order ipod nano black 4gb model with next day shipping, so should be here tomorrow. and as far I know the eq talks, the main menu talks and artists/titles speak. but hey its a start and I am sure more strides will be made just like the mac screen reader was built up so will this speaking menus.
well let us know your thoughts!!
i use jaws 9 with itoones and it works pretty good.
How accessible is jaws with iTunes 8? I keep hearing about window eyes, but not much on jaws.
BlindTechsNet are you sure you have ordered the nano 4th generation, as they are only available in 8GB and 16GB versions. sounds as if you may have a 3rd generation, or older in which case no talking menues. anybody interested in this new nano, take a listen to the screenless switches podcast where 3 of the group already have the new nano's.

To post 18, I was just about to do a bit of shameless self-promotion re: The Screenless Switchers, but now I don't have to. I will add though that even non-mac users might want to check this one out, not only for the ipod, but to hear what's been going on in the Accessible Mac World in the last week or so. It might be a bit on the long side though, but we were all having a lot of fun chatting about the Mac and Ipod.
Just a little side question... Does anyone still use anipod, or is it considered outdated now?
I'm sorry, it is the ipod black 4gen 8 gb model. for some reason I got confused on the 4gen and the flash capacity numbers and in the excitement said 4gb. but the ipod arrived today and it is now talking and I sinced everything to it already. its a little challenging to get use to the click wheel but its working for the most part. the ipod does come up talking and it reads all the folders of content that is on the screen. the only folders I have gone in to so far is the music and the podcasts. and oh yes, shake to shuffle it fun.
Hehehehe, I think the shake to shuffle would be fun as well!
Wow! gone for a while and look, Ipods rule! yes, going to buy mine on Tuesday when Tech Serv in nyc gets them in. They are about a half block from where I work so I can just pick it up. Neet!!! As far as the menus go the ones we really need do talk and I have no doubt that the rest will come. ITunes 8 works incredibly well with VoiceOver and I was actually previewing episodes of the show the office. It's amazing and apple is listening so please always remember to share your suggestions with Accessibility@apple.com and they will respond. Also go to www.appld.com/accessibility to find out what's up over there. They are really jumping on accessibility and I am hoping that what has helped is a surge in new customers. That never hurts right? Woof, woof!
